True to her promise, Larissa did not appear until three the next afternoon. She used the time to straighten up her own quarters for a change, read some in a book she’d been putting aside, catch up on work she’d brought home and admit that she was falling hopelessly in love with Matt.

It wasn’t that he was easy to love. He was the most obnoxious man when he wanted to be, which was often. But Larissa could see the roughness for what it was, a defense mechanism that was his outer shell against a hard world. At least he saw it as a hard world, and therefore he needed a shell.

Sometimes she felt as if she pierced it for a moment or two. Definitely out in the tent that Saturday night. He put up with things in her that she knew drove him nuts, like her storytelling and her fantasy. For someone as conservative and practical as Matt, she had to look like a loon. Still, he didn’t protest much about all her strangeness.

In fact, Larissa suspected he welcomed it. What little he had said about his childhood led her to believe it had been warm and secure and filled with just the kind of nonsense she was trying to provide for Jory. And for that Matt seemed to be grateful.

Grateful wasn’t enough to keep you warm at night, though. And grateful didn’t last any longer than a scoundrel, which Larissa already knew. No, what she needed was someone much more than grateful. Putting on her dangly earrings, Larissa had to admit that what she felt was probably hopeless. If Aunt Stell were still alive she would counsel to leave things just as they were and be happy with the semblance of family life that Matt and Jory had provided. “Shame that I never did listen, isn’t it, Stell?” Larissa murmured into the mirror.

Downstairs the men waiting for her looked sublime. Jory’s hair was combed and slicked, making him look freshly washed. “I like the tie,” Larissa told him. “It really makes you look dressed up.”

“It’s just my school pants,” he said solemnly. “Dad tied the tie.”

“Well, it certainly makes the outfit.”

“How about mine?” Matt asked.

“Yours definitely makes the outfit,” Larissa told him, straightening it a tiny bit. “And it’s not even your school pants.”

“Yeah, in my case the uniform just won’t translate to Sunday wear. The department logo tends to get in the way.” Nothing in Matt’s present outfit got in the way. His dark blue denim shirt and patterned tie brought out the glinting highlights in his dark hair. Larissa in her twill skirt suddenly felt underdressed.

“Should I go change?”

“What for? You look fine.”

“Yeah,” Jory agreed. “Besides, I’m hungry. Dad didn’t make a very fancy breakfast or anything and my stomach’s growling.”

Larissa looked at Matt in mock sternness. “Right. I make you responsible for one day and you starve the kid.”

“What can I say?” Matt held out an arm like a proper escort. “You have me spoiled.”

Larissa looked at him.
